Australian Championships 2011 - Incredible Results

The 2011 Australian Championships proved to be the most successful showcase for Mulawa-bred, owned and managed horses in the long competitive history of the stud. When the last sash was hung on Sunday afternoon, the grand total for Team Mulawa was 21 Australian Champions, 14 Australian Reserve Champions & 8 Top Tens.

The halter division of Team Mulawa scored an impressive four (4) Australian Championships, six (6) Australian Reserve Championships and two (2) Top Tens with all twelve entries returning from the ring with a champion sash. Incredibly, Mulawa achieved four double championship wins, dominating the Yearling Fillies (ROMANCE MI & MI ASPIRING VALENTINO), Two & Three Year Old Fillies (KLASSICAL DREAM MI & LLC BRIANA), Senior Mares (MULAWA KARISMAA & PRINCIPESSA CCA) & Yearling Colts (ATUNED MI & KONFIDENCE MI) with both the Champion & Reserve Champion award winners. Only one double entry resulted in a Reserve Championship and a Top Ten result – ASTOR & ANASTAZI MI, respectively, in the Two & Three Year Old Colt Championship. Of the eleven purebred halter entries exhibited by Mulawa at the 2011 Australian Championships, all were honoured with Top Ten or better, with only two (National Stud Show & East Coast Champions ANASTAZI MI & SOVEREIGN WINGS) achieving less than Champion or Reserve.

Mulawa breeding entries also earned the highest overall scores amongst the breeding entries. KLASSICAL DREAM was the highest scored horse of the entire Australian Championships using the World Cup scoring system at 327.5, with MULAWA KARISMAA close behind with an excellent score of 325.5, as well as the highest score for movement across all entries. Australian Yearling Champion Colt ATUNED MI was the highest scoring breeding male of the show, the third highest cumulative score overall at 324.5, and the only Australian Champion honoured as a unanimous choice in the comparative final.

KLASSICAL DREAM MI | Australian Champion Two & Three Year Old Filly

Mulawa Queen and broodmatron supreme KARMAA was most impressively the dam of three 2011 Australian Champions – Senior Mare winner MULAWA KARISMAA, Arabian Stallion Ridden by an Amateur Champion KARBON, and Arabian Working Stock Horse victor KLASS (with the ever capable Rodney Brown in the saddle). A former Australian Champion Yearling Filly, MULAWA KARISMAA, like stablemate PARADA in 2009-2010, finished the show year with a perfect undefeated record as National Stud Show, East Coast & Queensland Gala Event Senior Champion Mare.

Ever the “horse-that-can-do-it-all”, KLASS reinforced his iconic status in the breed as the prototypical versatile Arabian by winning his third successive Australian Championship in yet another division. Not only is KLASS the only stallion in the history of the Arabian horse on the continent to be named Australian Champion Stallion, Australian Champion Ridden Arabian Stallion & Australian Champion Arabian Working Stock Horse, KLASS is the proud sire of three Australian champion get. With only five purebred foals of show age, KLASS can count KLASSIC HARMONY MI – 2010 Australian Reserve Champion Yearling Filly, KONFIDENCE MI – 2011 Australian Reserve Champion Yearling Colt, as well as the reigning superstar KLASSICAL DREAM MI – Australian Champion Two & Three Year Old Filly, as the very best of his representative get. Remarkable results considering these three KLASS foals are the ONLY foals shown to date…

KLASS was not alone in representing Mulawa in terms of siring success. MAGNUM FORTY FOUR, who was honoured as Australian Champion Sire of the Year in 2010, looks poised to repeat the win in 2011 with several high profile winners. MAGNUM FORTY FOUR was the sire of both Australian Yearling Champions – ROMANCE MI & ATUNED MI, and Reserve Champion Two & Three Year Old Colt ASTOR, as well as Top Ten stablemate ANASTAZI MI. MAGNUM FORTY FOUR can also boast as maternal grandsire to both Australian Yearling Reserve Champions – ASPIRING VALENTINO (out of MULAWA ASPIRING) & KONFIDENCE MI (out of KARESS), in addition to Australian Champion Two & Three Year Old Filly KLASSICAL DREAM MI (out of MUSTANG’S MAGNUM).

International supersire MAGNUM PSYCHE also had a stellar show with three major winners to his credit, all bred by Mulawa via frozen semen. Australian Champion Senior Mare MULAWA KARISMAA remains one of his most beautiful and accomplished daughters worldwide, while full brothers MULAWA BRONZE WINGS and SOVEREIGN WINGS continue to achieve as undoubtedly the most successful get of MAGNUM PSYCHE under saddle.

TS AL MALIK continued to quietly influence the winner’s circle with a multitude of champion get, grandget and great-grandget in halter and performance. Four direct sons of TS AL MALIK were awarded Australian Champion honours – KLASS, AAMAHNI, KARBON & FIRE ALERT, while three sons – KLASS, KARBON & PARKVIEW AUDACIOUS proved to be champion sires in their own right at the same show. No less than eight Australian championships, twelve reserve championships and ten Top Tens were achieved by direct descendants of TS AL MALIK.

Team Mulawa performance proved well turned out and dominant from day one of the Australian Championships. Youth Rider Katharine Farrell led the team in overall accomplishment, achieving eight Australian Championships, two Reserve Championships and one Top Ten. Katharine was also honoured as Australian Champion Junior Judging with a very impressive score of 96%. With superstar Arabian Warmblood SUMMERZAR IMAGERY, Kate racked up six Australian Championships, while wonderpony OWENDALE LEMON TWIST & Kate rode their way to the winner’s circle in their single performance of the show. (Kate & “TWISTER” travelled home on Saturday evening to compete for Horse of the Year honours in Sydney on Sunday – we are happy to report that success was achieved!)

Head performance trainer Daniella Dierks led the team to further success with achievement on two purebred and three Arabian derivative performance winners, including the always dazzling Prix St Georges winner GORON TORON CONCORDE. All together, the Mulawa Performance Team won five Australian Championships in Dressage. In both Silver Snaffle championships for young horses, Daniella was sashed as the winner with MULAWA BRONZE WINGS (purebred) & SUGARLOAF SIRHARA (derivative). Daniella was also the winner of Australian Champion Rider over 18 Years of Age for the second successive year.

A special mention must go to Mulawa-bred GOLD N WINGS, owned by Courntey Gibson, who succeeded his Australian Champion Stallion title in 2010 with a Reserve Championship in the Arabian Stallion Bridle Path Hack and a strong Top Ten in the Ridden Arabian Stallion. Congratulations to Courtney on a wonderful show season of success with “WINGSY” under saddle – you make us all very proud!

The success of Mulawa in the show ring is a direct result of the hard work and dedication of both Mulawa Show Teams. An enormous debt of gratitude is owed to Team Halter – Paul Stockman, Jayna Prell, Mitchell Taff, Alissa Johnson, Laura Denning & Blake Campbell – as well as Team Performance – Annette Lowe, Danielle Currie, Tiffany Bignold & Jackie Currie – for turning out the Mulawa horses in a first class manner on every occasion. Thank you also to Cameron Bonney for earning the respect of the international Arabian horse community as the leading halter handler/trainer in Australia and for always presenting the Mulawa horses with dignity and respect. A special thank you to Andrew Sellman for assisting Mulawa in multiple ways both at home and abroad.

We are also pleased to announce that Mulawa Arabian Stud was honoured with Australian Breeder of the Year by the AHSA for the third successive year. Thank you and congratulations to the many clients and members of the Mulawa Community who helped make 2010-2011 our most successful show season to date. Here’s to a happy and successful season of showing and breeding ahead!
